Cool. I sort of like how he either forgot the original lyrics or just interpolated his own. Also, how has John Darnielle not formed a pop punk side project yet?
The change of “Watching Cops and reading Didion” is pretty clearly Darnielle’s own invention (and a great one at that), but I think the change from “Hair was blue, now it’s green” to “her eyes were green” are just a common misinterpretation/mishearing.
John Darnielle is a beautiful mythical creature. I’m so glad he replaced Kerouac with Didion because I think On the Road is the biggest piece of highly worshiped literary garbage ever.
